Import and Freight Administrator

Our client is a world leading manufacturer of construction equipment based in Birtley, County Durham. Due to current workloads and a healthy order book, they have created a new role within the Purchasing team for a Customs and Freight Controller on a permanent basis. This role will be responsible for forming strong relationships within the supply chain, processing customs entries, working in close contact with onsite Finance Department and externally with freight forwarding providers to ensure that import procedures and processes are closely followed.

The Role

* Manage overseas customs clearance and entries.

* Maintain all customs entries files.

* Check and validate 3rd party transport documents (Air Way Bill, Bill of Landing etc).

* Monitor harmonized commodity description and coding system with monthly reporting through a duty control committee.

* Support other areas of purchasing compliance including, ISO standards, service level agreements and other legislative issues and requirements.

* Develop and apply strong communication skills to liaise in both an inward and outward facing role to resolve problems and answer queries.

* Recording and planning both air, sea and land transport routes.

* Operational processing of transport insurance claims.

* Support the culture of continuous improvement by suggesting and implementing new processes.

* Assist with all activities relating to approvals and authorizations i.e., airworthiness, IPR, OPR etc.

* collect all import shipping documentation from Freight Forwarders and Customer Service teams on a daily basis to UK Customs Requirements.

* follow up with Freight Forwarders to obtain missing documentation in a timely manner; this involves working with tight deadline.

* Stay up to date with current legislation and export documentation requirements to ensure compliance.

* Communicate with internal finance and logistics teams.

The Company

Standard working hours: 8am – 4.45pm Monday – Thursday, 8am – 12.45pm Friday. Flexitime is available which can be worked around the core working hours.

Salary: £27,500 – £33,000 depending on experience.

Personal and Professional Development: If the successful candidate does not currently hold a CIPS qualification, this will be supported through the business.

About You

The successful candidate will be looking for a challenge within a world leading manufacturer. You will ideally have 3+ years in a similar freight forwarding or 3PL background with a positive and can do attitude.

* 3+ years experience in a freight forwarding or 3PL business.

* Knowledge of Air, Road and Sea Freight Shipping operations.

* Experience in dealing with a network of sub-contractors

* Strong experience in import procedures

* Good understanding of export licenses and their application

* Proven history in improving and standardizing processes & procedures, with a continuous improvement aptitude

* Competency with ERP systems

* Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to balance and prioritize workloads considering time constraints and attention to detail

* Understanding of import tax/duty

* Excellent Excel skills
